SRSG Miroslav Jenča visits Kazakhstan

ASTANA, Kazakhstan  -

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Ambassador Miroslav Jenča held official talks in Kazakhstan on 27-28 August as part of his regular trips to Central Asia.

Meetings were held with First Deputy Prime Minister U. Shukeyev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs K. Zhigalov, Deputy Senate Speaker M. Kopeyev and the director of the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre (CARICC), Lieutenant General B. Sarsekov.

SRSG Jenča and his interlocutors touched upon the main regional developments, including the impact of the global crisis, the security situation in Central Asia and the presidential election in Afghanistan. The importance of devising regional mechanisms for the regulation of water issues was underlined, and support was lent to the facilitation of this process by UNRCCA. Kazakh officials insisted on the significance of the upcoming Kazakh chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Discussions were held on the preparations for this event and the conduct of joint activities in support of regional stability and environmental security.
