UNRCCA CONVENES WORKING GROUP MEETING ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATIONAL STRATEGY OF TURKMENISTAN ON PREVENTING VIOLENT EXTREMISM AND COUNTERING TERRORISM
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan
On 18 September 2019, the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) hosted the second working group meeting on the development of the National Strategy of Turkmenistan on Preventing Violent Extremism and Countering Terrorism. Representatives of 23 governmental and public agencies of Turkmenistan gathered to undertake a comprehensive review of the draft national strategy.
Participants provided detailed comments, observations and suggestions on the substance of the document. The process of coordination for further elaboration of the development of the national strategy was also agreed.
SRSG Natalia Gherman noted that according to the mandate and based on the needs of all five Central Asian states, UNRCCA provides continues assistance in the area of preventing violent extremism and countering terrorism. She informed that following the request of the Government of Turkmenistan, UNRCCA jointly with UNOCT has decided to provide expertise in developing this document under the third phase of the project “Towards the Implementation of the Joint Plan of Action for the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia”. The SRSG expressed the readiness of UNRCCA to continue to support the efforts of Turkmenistan in this direction and further assist the elaboration of the strategy.
