BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Ambassador Miroslav Jenča held official talks in Bishkek on 25-26 August as part of his regular trips to the Central Asian capitals.

Meetings took place with Prime Minister Igor Chudinov, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kadyrbek Sarbaev and Minister of Industry and Energy Ilyas Davydov.

Discussions touched upon cooperation among Central Asian states in the water and energy sphere for the upcoming winter season and vegetation period. There was understanding on the need for long-term regulation of regional water problems through the establishment of a platform for discussions under UNRCCA auspices. The internal political situation following the July presidential election in Kyrgyzstan was assessed as stable, and the need to continue monitoring security developments in the region in light of events in Afghanistan and the August presidential election in that country was underscored. Kyrgyz officials noted with appreciation UNRCCA support to the promotion of environmental security and the elimination of uranium tailings in Central Asia.
