The Regional Centre represents a key example of the United Nations’ political engagement and preventive efforts in support of its Member States. It is mandated to liaise with the governments of the region on matters related to preventive diplomacy, to provide monitoring and analysis, and to maintain contact with regional organizations in order to facilitate coordination and information exchange.
In addition, the Centre is tasked with providing an overarching framework and leadership for the preventive activities of the UN country teams, as well as maintaining close contact with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to ensure a comprehensive and integrated analysis of the regional situation.
The Centre’s mandate is defined in its triennial Programmes of Action, which are developed in consultation with the governments of the Central Asian states.
