WATER COOPERATION IN CENTRAL ASIA DISCUSSED IN ALMATY

Almaty, Kazakhstan

On June 18-19, 2019, representatives of relevant ministries and institutions from the countries of Central Asia and Afghanistan as well as national and international experts gathered in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to discuss issues of water cooperation. The meeting was organized by the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) within the framework of its mandate to promote water dialogue in the region through preventive diplomacy.

The event consisted of two parts. On the first day, a training seminar on gender equality in water management was held through the lens of best practices and international standards in human rights.

The second day of the meeting was devoted to discussions of issues relating to existing agreements between the countries of the region in transboundary water cooperation. Meeting participants also reviewed the institutional and legal framework for water cooperation, as well as competing needs for promoting regional dialogue in this field.
