UNRCCA CO-ORGANIZES A REGIONAL ROUNDTABLE ON PROSECUSION, REHABILITATION AND REINTEGRATION OF INDIVIDUALS SUSPECTED OF TERRORISM

ALMATY, Kazakhstan

On 13-15 December 2023, UNRCCA in partnership with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (RATS SCO) organized a regional roundtable on the investigation and prosecution, rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals suspected of terrorism, including foreign terrorist fighters and their accompanying family members. The meeting took place in Almaty and gathered states officials from the SCO Member States, non-governmental organizations from Central Asian and relevant UN entities.

The agenda of the round table covered the contextual analysis as well as screening, investigative strategies and operative-search activities in the framework of repatriation and reintegration measures. Participants were introduced to the international legal framework and international good practice in custodian and non-custodian rehabilitation of individuals convicted of terrorists acts. The large part of discussion was devoted to national good practices and procedures of reintegration.

The regional round table was conducted under the project “UNOCT Cooperation with the RATS SCO” and within the framework of the UNRCCA and UNOCT multi-year efforts to support the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia.
