UNRCCA co-organizes a meeting with the donor community in support of counter-terrorism activities in Central Asia

NEW YORK, UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS

On 20 July, in the United Nations Headquarters in New York, UNRCCA together with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) convened a meeting with the Ambassadors of the Central Asian states and the donor community to assess the current and future activities in the field of preventing violent extremism and countering terrorism in Central Asia.

Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov addressed the meeting on behalf of the UNOCT.

In her statement, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Central Asia (SRSG) and the Head of UNRCCA, Natalia Gherman, underlined that the current global and regional developments clearly demonstrate that challenges regarding prevention of violent extremism and countering terrorism are not diminishing.

While inviting the Members States to support the efforts of the Central Asian states and the UN in the region, the SRSG stressed that the common approach and unity of the regional countries provide conditions conducive to effective international engagement and support.

Participants were acquainted with the scope of activities implemented by UNRCCA and UNOCT since the launch of a joint multi-year project in 2010. The main achievements of the project, such as the endorsement of the unique Joint Plan of Action for the Implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia, were highlighted.
