UN DAY MARKED IN KHOROG, TAJIKISTAN
The United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) marked UN Day with guests and participants of its second cross-border workshop for young people within its Preventive Diplomacy Academy in Khorog, capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast of Tajikistan.
UN Day is marked around the world each year on 24 October to commemorate the day that the Charter of the United Nations came into force in 1945.
During the small observance, part of the letter of Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres on the occasion was read out. In it, the Secretary-General wrote that this year, “United Nations Day also marks the beginning of our efforts to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations. We are aiming to make the most of this milestone by launching the biggest-ever global conversation on the role of international cooperation in building the future we want.”
Speaking on behalf of Special Representative of the Secretary-General Ms. Natalia Gherman, UNRCCA Political Affairs Officer Brian Pozun noted that the work of the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy fits well with this vision of a “global conversation,” with its focus on preventive diplomacy and inter-cultural communication across the borders of Central Asia and Afghanistan. The workshop in Khorog provided an opportunity for young people from Tajikistan and Afghanistan to join this conversation in a meaningful way.
The UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy will organize its third workshop, for Turkmen and Uzbek young people, on 29-31 October in Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan. Active project members from all Central Asian countries and Afghanistan will then be invited to take part in the initiative’s capstone event in Almaty on 25-26 November to present the results of the projects that they developed and implemented in their own communities with UNRCCA’s support.
