SRSG participates at the 15th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Tashkent

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan –

On 22-24 June, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), Petko Draganov, visited Tashkent as part of the UN delegation headed by the Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman to attend the meeting of the Council of the Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

On the margins of the Summit the UN delegation met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov. The SRSG also conducted bilateral meetings with the Director of the Scientific and Information Centre of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission (SIC ICWC) Victor Dukhovny and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Uzbekistan.

During the meetings current political developments in Central Asia and the wider region, the management of trans-boundary water resources in the Aral Sea Basin and providing support to Central Asian countries in dealing with the threats of terrorism, violent extremism and drug trafficking were discussed.
