SRSG FOR CENTRAL ASIA HIGHLIGHTS REGIONAL PRIORITIES DURING VISIT TO TAJIKISTAN

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan

SRSG Kaha Imnadze concluded a working visit to the Republic of Tajikistan, where he held a series of high-level consultations with senior officials and participated in the International High-Level Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation.

On 2 June, SRSG Imnadze met with H.E. Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan. The two sides reaffirmed their mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations system across a broad spectrum of areas, including the prevention of modern security threats, environmental protection, the sustainable management of water resources, and the preservation of glaciers, in line with national and regional priorities.

Also on 2 June, SRSG held a meeting with the Prosecutor General of Tajikistan, Mr. Habibullo Vohidzoda. Discussions focused on preventing violent extremism and countering terrorism within the framework of UNRCCA’s regional mandate. The parties exchanged views on regional security developments and emphasized the importance of coordinated action, including through the development of an updated national strategy for countering extremism and terrorism.

On 3 June, SRSG Imnadze met with Major General Murodali Rajabzoda, First Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for National Security and Commander of the Border Troops. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the regional security environment, including the evolving situation in Afghanistan, and joint efforts to strengthen border security and prevent transnational threats.

In a separate engagement, Mr. Imnadze held consultations with Ms. Bunafsha Faiziddinzoda, Chair of the Women’s Committee of Tajikistan and current Chairperson of the Central Asia Women Leaders’ Caucus (CAWLC). The discussion addressed Tajikistan’s action plan during its CAWLC presidency, upcoming initiatives under the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, and the importance of institutionalizing the CAWLC as a sustainable regional platform. The parties also emphasized the significance of ensuring the inclusion of women from Afghanistan in regional dialogue processes.

The visit reaffirmed UNRCCA’s continued commitment to supporting the efforts of Central Asian States to address shared challenges through dialogue, cooperation, and preventive diplomacy, in line with the Centre’s mandate.
