UNRCCA PREVENTIVE DIPLOMACY ACADEMY ORGANIZES FIRST WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE FROM KAZAKHSTAN AND KYRGYZSTAN

TARAZ, Kazakhstan

The United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) organized the first workshop within its new youth initiative, the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy, from 7 to 9 October 2019 in Taraz, Kazakhstan.

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Ms.Natalia Gherman opened the workshop together with Mr. Kairat Dosayev, the Akim (Mayor) of the city of Taraz and a representative of the Akim of the city of Talas.

The workshop brought together 15 young people from the city of Taraz and 15 young people from the city of Talas, just across the border in Kyrgyzstan, to learn about preventive diplomacy and the work of UNRCCA, conflict prevention strategies for their daily lives and in their communities, intercultural communication, leadership and the basics of project management. Young people from Shymkent, Kazakhstan also took part at the workshop.

Throughout the workshop, participants developed a number of projects meant to generate people-to-people contacts across borders and extend the reach of the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy to even more young people in both Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. UNRCCA will support the implementation of two of the projects, while the Akim of Taraz announced at the event that the city will support implementation of a third.

Participants were extremely active and engaged and their feedback was overwhelmingly positive. They all agreed that this opportunity to meet and work together with their peers from across the border clearly demonstrated that they have much in common – often, more than they had previously believed.

The next workshop, for Tajik and Afghan young people, will take place on 22-24 October in Khorog, Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, Tajikistan, followed by a third, for Turkmen and Uzbek young people, in Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan, on 29-31 October.
