SRSG NATALIA GHERMAN PARTICIPATES IN THIRD EURASIAN WOMEN’S FORUM

SAINT PETERSBURG, Russian Federation

On 13-15 October 2021, SRSG for Central Asia and Head UNRCCA, Natalia Gherman, participated in the Third Eurasian Women’s Forum in Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation.

The forum gathered representatives from private and public sectors, international, regional, national and local entities to share their experiences on strengthening women’s participation in a variety of fields, including peace and security, ecology, health, digitalization, economy, industrial agriculture, social progress. The Forum was hosted by the Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matviyenko. President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin,  addressed the Forum participants.  

In a video address to the Forum, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, welcomed the emphasis on coordinated global cooperation to strengthen women’s participation in the wide array of fields.

SRSG Gherman spoke at plenary session dedicated to the “Women’s Mission to Shape a New Agenda for Peace and Trust”. In her intervention, she reiterated the critical importance for increased coordinated efforts between various actors, including international organizations, governments and women leaders, in tackling international, regional and national challenges. “The time has come for decisive action, for global solidarity among women, for women to play a key role in post-pandemic recovery of our societies”, SRSG Gherman noted.

As an illustration of women’s solidarity and resolve to promote regional peace and security, SRSG highlighted the prominent role of the Central Asia Women Leaders’ Caucus (WLC) – the regional platform of prominent women politicians – which since its inception in December 2020 has significantly contributed to promotion of gender equality, advancement of the global Women, Peace and Security Agenda and regional co-operation as a whole.
