SRSG KAHA IMNADZE VISITS BEIJING

On 4-5 December 2023, Kaha Imnadze, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Central Asia, Head of UNRCCA, visited Beijing to conduct consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the People's Republic of China and  the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

SRSG Kaha Imnadze met with Mr. Li Hui, Special Representative on Eurasian Affairs, MFA, and exchanged views on a wide array of issues of mutual interest, including the overall geopolitical situation as well as specific political, security and socio-economic developments in Central Asia. The discussion focused on cross-border threats and challenges, such as terrorism, violent extremism and the situation in Afghanistan. The Chinese authorities highly appreciated the Centre`s activities designed for creating conditions and platforms for multilateral dialogue on pressing matters of regional security and cooperation, including on management of transboundary water resources.

The SRSG underlined the significance of China`s efforts to support security and stability in Central Asia, and socio-economic development of the region including through trade, energy and infrastructure projects.

SRSG Kaha Imnadze also visited the Headquarters of the SCO and held a meeting with Mr. Zhang Ming, Secretary General, to discuss cooperation between the two organizations in order to increase interaction and trust in the region, including through the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and different youth initiatives.
