SRSG Miroslav Jenča’s visit to Kazakhstan

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -

On 5 June, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), Miroslav Jenča, participated in a ministerial conference on protection of refugees and international migration that was organized by the Government of Kazakhstan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration.

The conference was conducted in the framework of the Almaty Process, which was initiated in March 2011 and which focuses on the following areas: exchange of information, monitoring of migration trends, promotion of comprehensive policies at the national and regional levels and enhancing State capacities related to international migration and refugees.

In his statement to the conference, the SRSG underlined the effects of migration on the social, economic, political and security environment in Central Asia. He encouraged participants to work towards a more coherent approach to managing migration and protecting refugees. The SRSG stressed that migration-related issues by definition involve more than one country, and therefore a regional approach is essential.

On the margins of the conference, SRSG Jenča met with Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Erlan Idrissov, High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and other senior officials.
