On 11 June 2026, UNRCCA, through its Preventive Diplomacy Academy (PDA), organized an online training session on “Intercultural Communication, Diplomacy and Conflict” bringing together participants from across Central Asia and Afghanistan. The session was led by Dr James M. Page, Honorary Fellow of the Durham University School of Government and International Affairs, and Honorary Fellow of the University of Exeter Institute of Strategy and Security (SSI).

The training explored the growing importance of intercultural communication in diplomacy and conflict prevention. Participants examined practical scenarios and real-world diplomatic examples illustrating how differences in language, cultural norms and communication styles can influence dialogue, negotiations and decision-making processes. Discussions also focused on the importance of preventing misunderstandings that can undermine cooperation and contribute to tensions.

Through presentations, interactive discussions and scenario-based exercises, participants strengthened their understanding of effective communication techniques and their application in diplomatic practice. Particular attention was given to building mutual understanding, adapting communication approaches and fostering constructive engagement in diverse cultural settings.

Highlighting the importance of communication in diplomacy and conflict prevention, Dr James M. Page noted: “Effective diplomacy depends on our ability to understand and adapt to cultural differences. Strengthening intercultural communication is essential to building trust, preventing misunderstandings and supporting peaceful outcomes.”

Through the Preventive Diplomacy Academy, UNRCCA continues to equip young diplomats and practitioners with the skills and knowledge needed to promote dialogue, strengthen cooperation and support preventive diplomacy across Central Asia and Afghanistan.
