UNRCCA MARKS 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF SPECIAL POLITICAL MISSIONS

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan

On 30 May 2023, UNRCCA organized a training session for the 45 graduates of the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy on the topic “Diplomacy for Peace”. The training session was devoted to the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations Special Political Missions.  Its aim was to raise awareness of young people on the role and impact of special political missions in conflict prevention, peacebuilding and peacemaking, as a vital part of the United Nations diplomacy for peace.

UNRCCA in its presentation covered the history and evolution of special political missions, including their evolving engagements in preventive diplomacy, supporting political processes and assisting in the implementation of peace agreements.

UNRCCA highlighted that the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) is providing support to the Secretary-General and his envoys in their peace initiatives, as well as to UN political missions around the world. The DPPA acts as an essential platform for crisis response, capable of quickly deploying mediators and other peacemaking expertise worldwide, with the approval of concerned countries.

The presentation of UNRCCA was conducted in an interactive format, followed by a Q&A session, where the audience asked numerous questions regarding multilateralism, the reform of the United Nations and current activities of UNRCCA at the regional level.
