UN Secretary-General's Meetings with the Heads of Central Asian Delegations at the 70th Session

NEW YORK, September 2015 -- Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held meetings with H.E. Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan H.E. Mr. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan, H.E. Mr. Erlan Abdyldayev, Foreign Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic and H.E. Mr. Abdulaziz Kamilov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan in the margins of the 70th regular session of the UN General Assembly. The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on 28 September. The two discussed the post-2015 sustainable development agenda, as well as the importance of regional cooperation and the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).

The Secretary-General and the President also discussed the challenges posed by violent extremism and terrorism and the preparation of the UN Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, which will be presented to the General Assembly during this session.

NEW YORK, 2 October 2015 -- Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Erlan Abdyldayev, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Erlan Abdyldayev, Foreign Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic on 2 October. They discussed issues related to sustainable development, development of a green economy and the need to uphold human rights while fighting terrorism and extremism.

They also exchanged views on the Peacebuilding Fund’s support to Kyrgyzstan, the United Nations support to the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections and the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan on 27 September.

They discussed sustainable development and climate change, including melting glaciers.

The Secretary-General welcomed the steps taken by Tajikistan to engage with the United Nations on human rights and looked forward to strengthening this cooperation. He also underscored the need to uphold human rights in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

The Secretary-General welcomed President Rahmon’s leadership in addressing the needs of land-locked developing countries. He commended Tajikistan’s efforts to promote regional cooperation and welcomed its engagement with UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan on 26 September. They discussed post-2015 sustainable development agenda and regional cooperation. They also addressed the fight against terrorism and the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Abdulaziz Kamilov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 25 September. They discussed the post-2015 sustainable development Agenda and the Aral Sea crisis.

The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister also addressed regional cooperation and the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), as well as cooperation on human rights issues.
