SRSG GHERMAN PARTICIPATES AT AN OPEN BRIEFING OF THE COUNTER-TERRORISM COMMITTEE ON CENTRAL ASIA

On 2 July 2018 in New York, SRSG Gherman took part in an open briefing of the Counter-Terrorism Committee on Central Asia, at the invitation of its Chair, together with Under Secretary General of the United Nations Counter Terrorism Office (UNOCT), Vladimir Voronkov, and Michèle Coninsx, Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED).

In her presentation, SRSG Gherman focused on the progress made by Central Asian states in implementing the relevant Security Council resolutions as well as the four pillars of the UN Global Counter Terrorism Strategy. She underlined the strong commitment of Central Asian states to work with United Nations and made particular reference to their cooperation with UNRCCA, OCT and CTED within a regional project meant to support the implementation in Central Asia of the Joint Plan of Action for the implementation of the Global Counterterrorism Strategy, in line with its latest review and the findings of CTED’s regional assessment and recommendations. She underlined the importance of international and regional cooperation in support of Central Asian counterterrorism efforts and emphasized the need to extend this cooperation with Afghanistan.
