Publication “Bilateral and Multilateral Cooperation on Trans-Boundary Water Resources in Central Asia"

The UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia has issued a new publication on “Bilateral and Multilateral Cooperation on Trans-Boundary Water Resources in Central Asia: The Way Forward Following the Sixth World Water Forum “.

This report has been prepared by an independent consultant for the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), based on presentations and discussions at the International Seminar on transboundary water cooperation held in Issyk –Kul, Kyrgyzstan on 25-26 June 2012 for representatives of Central Asian states and international organizations. The seminar was organized by the UNRCCA with financial support from the US Government. This report is a summary of the proceedings.

The two-day seminar commenced with a review of the outcomes of the 6th World Water Forum held in Marseille from the perspectives of UNRCCA and the national delegations. This was followed by sharing of experience among participants of the wide range of bilateral and multilateral cooperation activities already taking place in the region. Following overviews of various organizations’ activities, participants focused on the pilot bulletin produced by the Executive Committee of the International Fund for the Aral Sea (EC IFAS) in early 2012 following UNRCCA meeting in September 2011 and discussed what could be done to ensure that bulletins can serve as an increasingly useful tool for preventative diplomacy.

The publication is expected to be of interest to diplomats, state officials, academic circles and political analysts of Central Asian states and the international expert community that follows up on the developments in the region.
