UNRCCA ORGANIZES THIRD PREVENTIVE DIPLOMACY ACADEMY WORKSHOP, WITH YOUNG PEOPLE FROM TURKMENISTAN AND UZBEKISTAN

Turkmenabad, Turkmenistan

Third cross-border workshop within the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy was organized by UNRCCA in cooperation with the Youth Union of Turkmenistan in Turkmenabad, Turkmenistan, from 29 to 31 October 2019. Young people from Lebap Province of Turkmenistan and neighbouring Bukhara Province of Uzbekistan participated in the event.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Central Asia and Head of UNRCCA Ms. Natalia Gherman opened the workshop together with Mr. Gaygysyz Bayramov, Head of the Youth Union of Turkmenistan in Lebap Province. She spoke about the importance of investing in young people, particularly in border areas, and how training in the tools of preventive diplomacy can help them even in their daily lives.

Mr. Bayramov praised the work of the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy in engaging with youth from border regions. In his welcoming remarks to participants, he stressed the importance of working with young people in the area of intercultural cooperation and preventive diplomacy. “The Youth Union of Turkmenistan is open for cooperation and initiatives towards developing a culture of peace among young people,” he noted.

The agenda of the workshop included interactive sessions on preventive diplomacy and the work of UNRCCA, conflict prevention strategies for young people’s daily lives and for their communities, intercultural communication, leadership and the basics of project management.

In addition, like previous youth workshops organized by UNRCCA in Taraz, Kazakhstan, and Khorog, Tajikistan, part of the programme was dedicated to helping participants develop project ideas. These projects were meant to generate people-to-people contacts across borders and extend the reach of the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy to even more young people in both Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. UNRCCA will support the implementation of two of these projects: one in Turkmenistan and one in Uzbekistan.

The meeting took place in an atmosphere of friendship and neighbourliness and many participants were eager to cooperate with one another in future endeavours.

The workshop in Turkmenabad was the last cross-border event in this year’s project. Youth leaders from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will next join their peers from the other Central Asian countries and Afghanistan in the UNRCCA Preventive Diplomacy Academy capstone event in Almaty on 25-26 November. There, they will present the results of the projects that they developed and implemented in their own communities with UNRCCA’s support. Later that month, youth leaders will also participate in the first-ever regional dialogue between high-level officials and youth at UNRCCA’s annual Deputy Foreign Ministers meeting, in Tashkent.
