Statement of the SRSG on the occasion of the presidential election in the Kyrgyz Republic

BISHKEK, Kyrgyz Republic

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Central Asia Miroslav Jenča visited Bishkek from 30-31 October. He took note of the preliminary results of the 30 October presidential election and reports of the monitoring missions. He congratulated the people of Kyrgyzstan on the peaceful conduct of the election that demonstrated widespread popular support for peace, order and stability.

He calls on political forces and their leaders to show restraint and seek solution of election related disputes in line with the law. It is of utmost importance that the election contributes to the democratic, secure and prosperous future for all citizens of Kyrgyzstan.

During his visit, the Special Representative met with President Roza Otunbaeva, Speaker of the Parliament Akhmatbek Keldibekov, Chair of the Central Election Commission Tuigunaly Abdraimov and Deputy Foreign Minister Dinara Kemelova. He also met with heads of monitoring missions of the OSCE, CIS, SCO and local civil society organizations.

The SRSG reiterated the readiness of the United Nations to continue constructive cooperation with Kyrgyzstan.
