SRSG Jenča visits Uzbekistan

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan –

Miroslav Jenča, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG) and Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), visited Uzbekistan on 24-26 February for meetings with First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Finance Rustam Azimov, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Water Management Shavkat Khamraev. The SRSG also met with the representatives of diplomatic corps accredited to Uzbekistan.

During the meetings an exchange of views took place on issues related to the management of trans-boundary water resources, solution of environmental problems in the Aral Sea Basin, fight against trans-border threats, perspectives of reaching mutually acceptable solutions, possible support of the international and initiatives of UNRCCA.

Discussions also touched upon potential security developments in Central Asia, taking into account the situation in the neighboring Afghanistan in the context of the upcoming drawdown of the troops of the international coalition in 2014 and possible contribution of Central Asian countries to the efforts of the rehabilitation of the Afghan economy.
