PREVENTIVE DIPLOMACY ACADEMY EMPOWERS CENTRAL ASIAN AND AFGHAN YOUTH IN CONFLICT PREVENTION
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan
The Preventive Diplomacy Academy (PDA) successfully concluded its training on 7 and 14 May, engaging 48 young people from Central Asia and Afghanistan in a dynamic online program focused on conflict prevention and mediation. Held under the theme “Conflict Prevention: Theory, Causes, and Factors,” the sessions equipped participants with critical skills to address tensions and foster peace in their communities.
Led by Dr. Evan Hoffman, a renowned expert in mediation, and supported by the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs’ Mediation Support Unit (MSU), the program offered a blend of theoretical insights and practical exercises. Participants explored the UN’s approach to conflict prevention, including diplomatic measures, early warning systems, and mediation strategies. A key highlight was the introduction to UN Security Council Resolution 1325, emphasizing the vital role of women in peace processes and the need for their greater inclusion in mediation efforts.
The sessions featured interactive roleplays, breakout discussions, and a panel on mediation careers, providing hands-on experience in negotiation and dialogue. Participants engaged in scenarios designed to sharpen their ability to clarify misperceptions, promote collaboration, and propose solutions to conflicts. A small group exercise on lessons learned allowed participants to apply their knowledge to real-world contexts.
Special attention was given to the role of women in peacebuilding, addressing the persistent underrepresentation of women in formal peace processes.
The program also showcased innovative MSU initiatives, such as AI-powered digital dialogues in Guatemala to boost youth political participation and strategic discussions on climate change’s impact on peace missions. These examples highlighted the UN’s commitment to inclusive and forward-thinking approaches to peacebuilding.
The Preventive Diplomacy Academy, supported by the UN, continues to empower youth to contribute to peace and stability, aligning with the organization’s mission to prevent conflict and promote sustainable development.
