Press Briefing on the World Humanitarian Summit

On 12 May, a press briefing on the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit to take place on 23-24 May 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey, was organized in the UNRCCA premises. The briefing was conducted through the video link from New York and presented by Mr. Stephen O'Brien, Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. USG O’Brien briefed the participants on the goals and the expected outcomes of the WHS, which was followed by the Q&A session afterwards.

The briefing was attended by the representatives of the Turkmen and foreign mass media, TV and the Department of Information of the Turkmen MFA. Simultaneous translation into Russian was provided by the UNRCCA.

The first-ever World Humanitarian Summit is a global call to action by United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon. The Summit aims to re-inspire and reinvigorate a global commitment to humanity and in particular to upholding the dignity and safety of the millions of women, men and children who are caught up in crises.

The Summit is a platform for Heads of State and Government, and leaders from civil society, the private sector, crisis-affected communities and multilateral organizations to announce their commitments to change, to launch new initiatives and partnerships, and to showcase innovative practices and ideas to enable countries and communities better prepare for and respond to crises, and be more resilient to shocks.
