SRSG participates at the 2016 OSCE-wide Counter-Terrorism Conference

BERLIN, Germany –

On 31 May – 2 June, Ambassador Petko Draganov, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of UNRCCA, visited Berlin in order to participate in the 2016 OSCE-wide Counter-Terrorism Conference “Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and Radicalization that Lead to Terrorism” and to have bilateral meetings with senior German officials.

The two-day conference focused on preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism (VERLT). Participants discussed how to deal with returning foreign terrorist fighters and possible ways for their re-integration into society. The Conference also offered a forum for exchange on international trends concerning the fight against terrorism, focusing especially on the role of youth and women. In his opening remarks at the conference the SRSG underlined that violent extremism undermines the collective efforts of the UN and of other partners to maintain peace and security, foster sustainable development, promote the respect for human rights and deliver much needed humanitarian aid.

In the margins of the event, Ambassador Draganov met with Mr. Andreas Peschke, Director for Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, Dr. Patricia Flor, Director-General for International Order, the United Nations and Arms Control, Dr. Almut Wieland-Karimi, Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF) and held meetings with the representatives of Körber Foundation. The sides discussed security related developments in the region as well as activities of the Centre.
