SRSG visits Kazakhstan

ASTANA, Kazakhstan –

On 24-27 May, Ambassador Petko Draganov, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of UNRCCA, visited Kazakhstan in order to participate in the Astana Economic Forum and to have bilateral meetings with senior Kazakh officials.

At the forum he delivered a keynote presentation on the UNRCCA’s experience in the capacity building of the civil servants from the Central Asian states. In the margins of the forum the SRSG has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the UNRCCA and the Academy to ensure closer cooperation between the parties for better education and training of civil servants and diplomatic staff.

In Astana, Ambassador Draganov met with the Speaker of the Senate Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, First Deputy Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Erlan Idrissov and other officials. The sides exchanged views on political, economic and security developments in Central Asia and beyond. Particular focus was on challenges related to water/energy issues, transnational organized crime, situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East, and ways to address them. Prospects for strengthening regional cooperation in a broad range of issues related to the implementation of the UNRCCA’s mandate were raised as well.
