SRSG’s visit to Uzbekistan

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan –

On 24 April, Miroslav Jenča, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, visited Uzbekistan for meetings with the Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea Shavkat Khamraev.

During the meetings, an exchange of views took place on the current situation in Central Asia, potential developments, taking into account developments in Afghanistan and a broader region. The Centre’s work in facilitating the Central Asian states in addressing regional challenges to maintain peace and stability was positively assessed. Perspectives of bilateral and multilateral approaches towards finding mutually acceptable solutions in the management of trans-boundary water resources were discussed.

The sides also focused on other topical issues of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNRCCA, including participation of Uzbekistan in in the meeting of senior officials of the Central Asian states on international norms of regional cooperation in water use prospects in Vienna on 29-30 April, and further implementation of the UN Global Counter Terrorism Strategy.
